About this test

Everything you need to know about Iron Health Check

Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around your body. When iron runs low, the first signs are often tiredness, breathlessness, headaches, feeling cold or hair shedding — long before anaemia shows on a blood count. Low iron is common in women with heavy periods, during and after pregnancy, in people who eat little or no meat, and in endurance athletes.

This kit measures ferritin, the best guide to your iron stores, alongside iron, transferrin, total iron-binding capacity and transferrin saturation, which show how much iron is circulating and available. Together they tell low stores apart from low supply, and they also pick up iron building up too high. Our clinical team explains your results and what to do about them.

Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Tiredness, breathlessness, headaches or hair shedding
  • Heavy periods, pregnancy or recently giving birth
  • A vegetarian or vegan diet, or regular blood donation
  • Taking iron supplements and checking whether you still need them
Important: A home test is not a diagnosis on its own. Where something needs looking at, we tell you what it means and what to do next. If you are unwell now, please see your GP or call 111 rather than waiting for a kit.

Frequently Asked

Iron Health Check — FAQs

Does this test for anaemia?
It tells you about iron, the most common cause of anaemia, but anaemia itself is diagnosed from haemoglobin in a full blood count, which is not in this kit. If your iron is low, our clinician may suggest your GP checks your full blood count and looks for the cause.
Why can ferritin be misleading?
Ferritin also rises with infection, inflammation, liver problems and alcohol, so it can look normal or high even when iron is short. That is why this kit includes transferrin saturation — and why it is best not to collect during, or just after, an illness.
Should I stop my iron supplements before testing?
Leave them out for 24 hours before you collect so the iron result reflects your usual level. Do not stop iron your doctor has prescribed for longer than that without checking with them.
What if my iron is low?
Our clinician explains your results and how to raise your iron through diet or supplements. It is also important to find out why it is low — heavy periods, diet or, sometimes, blood loss from the gut — so we may recommend a conversation with your GP.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
