What to expect

Your appointment

1

Brief on-arrival screening (3 min)

A trained clinical staff member confirms your suitability based on your online questionnaire and reviews any prior B12 test results.

2

Intramuscular injection (under 1 min)

A quick injection into the upper arm or buttock. You'll feel a brief sting, similar to other vaccinations. The injection itself takes less than a minute.

3

Brief recovery (5 min)

A short observation period to ensure no immediate reactions, then you're free to leave.

Pre-treatment blood test — may be required

For a single trial injection, no blood test is needed. For an ongoing course, we recommend a Vitamin Profile or B12 / Folate test to confirm deficiency and track your response — this allows us to tailor the right course length and frequency for you.

Frequently Asked

Vitamin B12 Treatment (IM) — FAQs

Why a Vitamin B12 injection instead of oral tablets?
Oral B12 absorption is limited and varies significantly between people — particularly in older adults, vegans, and anyone with pernicious anaemia or absorption issues. IM injections bypass the gut entirely and deliver a reliable, predictable dose into the bloodstream.
How quickly will I feel an improvement?
Many patients with confirmed B12 deficiency notice improvements in energy, mental clarity and mood within 1–2 weeks. If you're not deficient, you may not notice much difference — which is why testing first is helpful.
How often should I have a B12 injection?
For confirmed deficiency, a typical loading course is weekly for 4–6 weeks, then maintenance every 4–12 weeks. For preventive use (vegans, older adults), monthly is common. We'll agree a schedule based on your needs.
Does the injection hurt?
Most patients describe a brief sting at the injection site, similar to a flu vaccination. The injection itself takes under a minute. Some report mild soreness for a day afterwards.
Where is the injection given?
Either the upper arm (deltoid muscle) or the upper outer buttock (gluteal). You can choose based on preference and convenience.
Should I have a blood test first?
For a single trial shot, no. For an ongoing course, we strongly recommend testing first — to confirm deficiency, identify the cause, and tailor the right course length and frequency.
Can I have B12 if I'm vegan or vegetarian?
Vegans and strict vegetarians are at higher risk of B12 deficiency since B12 is only naturally found in animal products. We use hydroxocobalamin which is not derived from animal sources — suitable for vegan patients.
Are there any side effects?
B12 injections are very well tolerated. Some patients have mild soreness at the injection site for 24 hours. Very rare: allergic reaction (we screen for this). B12 itself is non-toxic — your body excretes any excess.
Can I have B12 alongside other treatments?
Yes — B12 pairs well with Energy Support IV, Hair/Skin/Nails IV, or as a standalone monthly shot. Many patients have B12 alongside their regular IV protocol.
Is it safe if I'm pregnant?
B12 injections during pregnancy are considered safe if there's a clinical need, but we recommend discussing with your antenatal team first. Please note pregnancy on your suitability form.
Where is the clinic?
44 Crawford Street, London W1H 1JS — a short walk from Marylebone and Edgware Road stations. All injections are administered at our clinic.
