Coeliac Antibody
Checks for the antibodies your immune system makes in coeliac disease, measured as both IgA and IgG so the result still works if you naturally make little IgA.
Everything you need to know about Coeliac Antibody
In coeliac disease, gluten — found in wheat, barley and rye — triggers an immune reaction that damages the lining of the small intestine. Symptoms vary widely: bloating, diarrhoea or constipation and tummy pain, but also tiredness, iron-deficiency anaemia, mouth ulcers, weight loss or no obvious symptoms at all. Many people go years without a diagnosis.
This blood test looks for the antibodies the body makes in coeliac disease. The IgA antibody is the main test; an IgG antibody is included because some people naturally make very little IgA, which can hide a positive result. A positive result is not a diagnosis on its own — it usually leads to a referral for confirmation — so please keep eating gluten until that has been decided.
