About this test

Everything you need to know about Essential Liver

Your liver processes nutrients, alcohol and medicines, makes proteins and clears waste. It is also very good at carrying on quietly under strain, which is why liver problems — most commonly fatty liver linked to weight and metabolism, and damage from alcohol — often cause no symptoms until they are advanced.

This kit measures the enzymes released when liver cells are irritated or damaged (ALT and AST), the enzymes linked to the bile ducts and to alcohol (ALP and GGT), bilirubin, which the liver clears from old red blood cells, and albumin, a protein the liver makes. Our clinical team explains what the pattern of your results means and the sensible next steps.

ALT & ASTEnzymes released when liver cells are irritated or damaged.

Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Regularly drinking more than the recommended 14 units a week
  • Carrying excess weight, or living with type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol — the main risks for fatty liver
  • Taking medicines or supplements that can affect the liver
  • A previous abnormal liver result you want to recheck
Important: A home test is not a diagnosis on its own. Where something needs looking at, we tell you what it means and what to do next. If you are unwell now, please see your GP or call 111 rather than waiting for a kit.

Frequently Asked

Essential Liver — FAQs

Can this tell me if I have fatty liver?
Not on its own. Fatty liver often causes a mild rise in ALT and GGT, but it can also be present with normal results. If your results or risk factors suggest it, your GP can arrange further tests such as a liver fibrosis score or a scan.
Should I stop drinking before the test?
There is no need to change your habits. GGT reflects drinking over the past few weeks rather than one evening, and the result is most useful when it reflects how you normally drink.
Why avoid exercise before the test?
Hard exercise releases AST and ALT from muscle as well as liver, which can make your results look raised. Avoid strenuous training for 48 hours before you collect.
What if a result is slightly raised?
Mildly raised liver tests are common and often settle. Our clinician explains the pattern of your results and whether a repeat or a conversation with your GP is the sensible next step.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
