Kidney Filtration Check (eGFR)
Measures creatinine and calculates your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) — the standard measure of how well your kidneys are filtering your blood.
Everything you need to know about Kidney Filtration Check (eGFR)
Creatinine is a waste product made steadily by your muscles and cleared by your kidneys: the more slowly your kidneys filter, the higher it rises. The laboratory uses your creatinine, age and sex to calculate eGFR — an estimate of how many millilitres of blood your kidneys clean each minute, and the figure doctors use to stage kidney health.
Kidney function declines slowly and silently, often with no symptoms until it is well advanced, so a regular check is worthwhile if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or a family history of kidney disease. Our clinical team explains your eGFR and, if it is lower than expected, what to do next.
