About this test

Everything you need to know about Essential Thyroid Check

Your thyroid sets the pace of your metabolism, so when it slows down or speeds up the effects are felt everywhere — energy, weight, mood, sleep, temperature, heart rate, hair and skin. The symptoms overlap with everyday tiredness and stress, which is why a blood test is the only way to know.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is the pituitary gland’s signal to the thyroid: it rises when the thyroid is under-active and falls when it is over-active. Free T4 and free T3 are the hormones the thyroid actually releases. Together they show how your thyroid is working. If you want to know whether an autoimmune condition is behind a change, Advanced Thyroid adds the two thyroid antibodies.

What's included

3 markers in this test

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) Free T3 Free T4
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)The pituitary’s signal to the thyroid — high when the thyroid is under-active, low when it is over-active.
Free T4The main hormone the thyroid releases.
Free T3The more active form, made mostly from T4 in the body’s tissues.
Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Persistent tiredness, weight change or feeling unusually cold or hot
  • Low mood, anxiety, brain fog or poor sleep
  • A family history of thyroid disease
  • Monitoring a known thyroid condition between GP checks
Important: A home test is not a diagnosis on its own. Where something needs looking at, we tell you what it means and what to do next. If you are unwell now, please see your GP or call 111 rather than waiting for a kit.

Frequently Asked

Essential Thyroid Check — FAQs

Why stop biotin before the test?
Biotin (vitamin B7), common in hair, skin and nail supplements, can interfere with the way these hormones are measured and give misleading results. Stop it for at least 48 hours before you collect your sample.
I take levothyroxine — when should I collect?
Collect your sample before your daily dose, then take your tablet as usual. Keep to your usual GP monitoring; this kit is an extra check, not a replacement.
How is this different from Advanced Thyroid?
Advanced Thyroid adds anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, which show whether an autoimmune condition such as Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease is involved. With a family history of autoimmune thyroid disease, or borderline results in the past, the advanced kit gives more to go on.
What if my result is borderline?
Thyroid results can shift slightly with illness, medicines and time of day. Our clinician explains whether a repeat in a few weeks is sensible, or whether to see your GP.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
