About this test

Everything you need to know about ROMA Ovarian Risk Assessment

ROMA (Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm) combines two blood markers — CA 125 and HE4 — with your menopausal status to estimate how likely it is that a mass on the ovary or in the pelvis is cancerous rather than benign. It is designed to be used after a mass has been seen on an ultrasound or other scan, to help with decisions about referral and specialist care.

It is not a screening test, and it is not suitable for checking for ovarian cancer when no mass has been found. CA 125 can be raised by many non-cancerous conditions — periods, endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy, pelvic infection — and HE4 is affected by kidney function and smoking. Our clinical team explains your result in the context of your scan and history, and it should always be shared with the doctor looking after you.

What's measured

What's included

4 markers in this test

Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) HE4 Human Epididymis Protein 4 ROMA (post-menopausal) ROMA (pre-menopausal)
Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125)A protein that can be raised by ovarian cancer — and by many harmless conditions.
HE4 (Human Epididymis Protein 4)A second marker that helps tell benign from malignant masses.
ROMA (pre- and post-menopausal)The combined score; your report shows both, and the one that applies to you is used.
Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • An ovarian cyst or pelvic mass found on a scan, where more information would help
  • Waiting for a specialist review and wanting the ROMA score alongside your scan
  • Following up an earlier ROMA or CA 125 result, as advised by your doctor
Important: Tumour markers and risk scores such as ROMA are not screening tests. They can be raised by many conditions that are not cancer and can be normal when cancer is present, so they are always interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and scans. If you have symptoms that worry you, please see your GP rather than waiting for a test.

Frequently Asked

ROMA Ovarian Risk Assessment — FAQs

Can this test screen me for ovarian cancer?
No. ROMA is designed for women who already have an ovarian or pelvic mass on a scan. Without a known mass, raised CA 125 and HE4 are far more often caused by something harmless, and a normal result does not rule cancer out. If you have persistent bloating, pelvic or tummy pain, feel full quickly or need to pass urine more often, please see your GP.
Why does menopausal status matter?
CA 125 and HE4 behave differently before and after the menopause, so ROMA uses a different calculation for each. Your report shows both scores, and our clinician uses the one that applies to you.
What can raise CA 125 apart from cancer?
Periods, endometriosis, fibroids, pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease and some liver and abdominal conditions can all raise it. That is why the result is always read alongside your scan and history.
Should I share the result with my doctor?
Yes. ROMA is most useful in the hands of the doctor managing the mass. We provide a written summary you can share with your GP or specialist.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
