About this test

Everything you need to know about Women’s Tumour Marker Panel

Tumour markers are substances that some cancers release into the blood. In people already diagnosed with cancer, doctors use them to help track treatment and watch for recurrence; alongside symptoms and scans, they can also contribute to an assessment. This panel includes markers associated with ovarian (CA 125), breast (CA 15-3), pancreatic and digestive (CA 19-9, CEA), germ-cell (AFP, beta-hCG) and some neuroendocrine cancers (NSE).

They are not a reliable way to screen healthy people for cancer. Many harmless conditions raise them — periods, pregnancy, endometriosis, smoking, and liver, gut or lung inflammation — and many cancers do not raise them at all, especially early on. If you have symptoms that worry you, please see your GP rather than waiting for a test.

What's measured

What's included

7 markers in this test

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (bHCG) Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) Cancer Antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) Cancer Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE)
Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Monitoring between appointments after a cancer diagnosis, as agreed with your specialist
  • A clinician has suggested tumour markers as part of an assessment
  • Following up a previous raised marker that is being kept under review
Important: Tumour markers and risk scores such as ROMA are not screening tests. They can be raised by many conditions that are not cancer and can be normal when cancer is present, so they are always interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and scans. If you have symptoms that worry you, please see your GP rather than waiting for a test.

Frequently Asked

Women’s Tumour Marker Panel — FAQs

Can this test tell me if I have cancer?
No. A raised marker does not mean you have cancer, and a normal result does not mean you do not. Tumour markers are interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and imaging. If you have a lump, unexplained weight loss, unusual bleeding, persistent bloating or a change in bowel habit, please see your GP promptly.
What can raise these markers apart from cancer?
Periods, pregnancy, endometriosis, fibroids, smoking, liver disease, pancreatitis, gallstones and inflammatory bowel conditions can all raise one or more of them. That is why any raised result is interpreted carefully and usually repeated.
What happens if a marker is raised?
Our clinician explains what the result could mean and whether it should be repeated, and recommends you share it with your GP or specialist, who can decide whether further tests are needed. We provide a written summary to take with you.
I have been treated for cancer — can I use this for monitoring?
Markers are most useful when compared with your own earlier results measured the same way. Check with your specialist which markers they follow and how often, and share your results with them.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
