Coeliac Disease Test
HLA-DQ genotyping — the test that can effectively rule coeliac disease out. Almost everyone with coeliac disease carries HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8; if you carry neither, coeliac disease is very unlikely to be the cause of your symptoms.
Everything you need to know about Coeliac Disease Test
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten that damages the lining of the small intestine, causing anything from bloating, diarrhoea and tiredness to anaemia, weight loss and bone thinning. It is common — around one in 100 people — and most are undiagnosed.
This test reads your HLA-DQ genes. Carrying HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 is almost a prerequisite for coeliac disease, so a negative result makes the condition very unlikely and lets you and your GP look elsewhere for the cause of your symptoms. A positive result does not mean you have coeliac disease — around a third of people carry these genes — but it means it cannot be ruled out, and antibody testing (while still eating gluten) is the next step.
