About this test

Everything you need to know about Female Hormone

Irregular or missing periods, acne, unwanted hair, low libido, mood swings, hot flushes, difficulty conceiving — the symptoms of a hormone imbalance are common and easily blamed on stress or age. A single hormone rarely settles the question, which is why this profile measures the whole system.

FSH and LH show the pituitary’s signal to the ovaries and point towards PCOS, perimenopause or a pituitary cause; oestradiol shows the ovaries’ response; progesterone shows whether you have ovulated; prolactin can suppress ovulation when raised; and testosterone, SHBG and the free androgen index pick up the androgen excess behind PCOS. Timing matters — the first few days of your cycle for most markers, about a week before your period for progesterone — and we help you pick the right day. Results are explained by our clinical team, including when a GP or specialist review is warranted.

Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Irregular, heavy, missing or painful periods
  • Suspected PCOS — acne, excess hair, weight gain, irregular cycles
  • Perimenopause symptoms: hot flushes, night sweats, sleep and mood changes
  • Trying to conceive, or low libido and tiredness without an obvious cause
Important: A blood test is not a diagnosis on its own. Where something needs looking at, we tell you what it means and what to do next. If you are unwell now, please see your GP or call 111 rather than waiting for a test.

Frequently Asked

Female Hormone — FAQs

When in my cycle should I book?
Day 2 to 5 (the first day of your period counts as day 1) for FSH, LH, oestradiol and the androgens. If the main question is whether you ovulate, a sample about seven days before your next period is due is the one to have. With irregular or absent periods, book any day and tell us — the results are read in that light.
Can I have this on the pill or with a hormonal coil?
Hormonal contraception suppresses the cycle hormones, so most of the results would reflect the contraception rather than you. If you want a true picture, test at least a few weeks after stopping; if you are staying on it, tell us and we will advise which markers are still informative.
Can it diagnose PCOS or the menopause?
It provides the hormone part of the picture. PCOS is diagnosed on a combination of symptoms, hormones and sometimes an ultrasound; the menopause is confirmed by symptoms and age, with FSH useful in some situations. Our clinician explains what your pattern suggests and the sensible next step.
What if something is abnormal?
A single abnormal result is often repeated at a different point in the cycle before any decision is made. Our clinician explains your result and the sensible next steps with your GP or a specialist.
Where is the test done?
44 Crawford Street, London W1H 1JS — a short walk from Marylebone and Edgware Road stations. Your sample is taken at the clinic by our clinical team; you do not need to bring anything.
How long does the appointment take?
About 15 minutes. If you have booked several tests they are all done in the same visit.
Can I book several tests at once?
Yes. Use “Add to booking” on each test and then “Book” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one appointment and one payment. Home test kits are ordered separately, because they are posted to you.
How do I pay, and can I cancel?
Pay online when you book — by card or bank transfer — or at the clinic where that option is offered. You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment for a full refund.
How do I get my results?
Results are released to your secure account and explained by our clinical team in a written summary, with a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test: routine blood panels are quicker than genetic or DNA analysis, and we tell you what to expect at your appointment.
