About this test

Everything you need to know about Inherited High Cholesterol Risk Test

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) affects around one in 250 people and most do not know they have it. It means LDL cholesterol is high from birth, so the arteries are exposed for decades longer than usual — which is why untreated FH leads to heart disease unusually early. Found in time, it is very treatable.

This test analyses the genes where FH-causing changes are found: LDLR, APOB, PCSK9, LDLRAP1 and APOE. A genetic test looks at the DNA you were born with. It tells you about inherited likelihood, not certainty: a variant can raise your risk without meaning you will develop the condition, and a clear result does not remove the everyday risk everyone carries. Results are explained to you by our clinical team, and we will say when a conversation with your GP or a genetics service is the right next step. A positive result usually means a conversation with your GP about lipid-lowering treatment and testing of close relatives, half of whom are likely to carry the same change.

Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Total cholesterol above 7.5 mmol/L or LDL above 4.9 mmol/L on a previous test
  • A parent or sibling with a heart attack or angina before 60 (men) or 65 (women)
  • High cholesterol that has not responded to diet and exercise
  • Fatty deposits around the eyes or tendons (xanthelasma, tendon xanthomas)
Important: A genetic test describes inherited likelihood, not certainty, and is not suitable for everyone. Our clinical team talks it through with you before the sample is taken and explains the result afterwards, including when a conversation with your GP or a genetics service is the right next step.

Frequently Asked

Inherited High Cholesterol Risk Test — FAQs

Does this test measure my cholesterol?
No — it looks at the genes that control how your body clears LDL cholesterol. To measure the cholesterol itself, the Cholesterol Ratio, Non-HDL Cholesterol or Advanced Metabolic Health home kits are the right tests, and many people do both.
My cholesterol is high but no variant was found — what does that mean?
Most high cholesterol is not FH; it comes from a mix of many small genetic effects, diet and lifestyle. A clear result does not mean your cholesterol needs less attention, only that a single inherited cause is unlikely.
If I have FH, what happens next?
Our clinician explains the result and recommends you see your GP, who can start or adjust treatment and refer you to a lipid clinic. Relatives can then be offered testing — finding FH in a family often protects several people at once.
How long do results take?
Genetic analysis takes longer than a routine blood test. We tell you the expected turnaround at your appointment.
Does this matter if I am planning a pregnancy?
Yes. Cholesterol-lowering medicines are usually stopped before and during pregnancy, so knowing whether you have FH helps you and your GP plan treatment around it. Half of your children would be expected to inherit the variant and can be tested in childhood.
Where is the test done?
44 Crawford Street, London W1H 1JS — a short walk from Marylebone and Edgware Road stations. Your sample is taken at the clinic by our clinical team; you do not need to bring anything.
How long does the appointment take?
About 15 minutes. If you have booked several tests they are all done in the same visit.
Can I book several tests at once?
Yes. Use “Add to booking” on each test and then “Book” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one appointment and one payment. Home test kits are ordered separately, because they are posted to you.
How do I pay, and can I cancel?
Pay online when you book — by card or bank transfer — or at the clinic where that option is offered. You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment for a full refund.
How do I get my results?
Results are released to your secure account and explained by our clinical team in a written summary, with a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test: routine blood panels are quicker than genetic or DNA analysis, and we tell you what to expect at your appointment.
