About this test

Everything you need to know about Free Testosterone Test

Testosterone affects energy, mood, libido, muscle, bone and how your body stores fat. Most of it travels in the blood tightly bound to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), with some loosely attached to albumin; only a small free fraction is active. When SHBG is high — which becomes more common with age — total testosterone can look normal while the amount your body can use is low.

This kit measures total testosterone, SHBG and albumin and calculates free testosterone, so you can see both numbers. Testosterone is highest in the morning and varies from day to day, which is why a low result should always be confirmed with a repeat morning sample. Our clinical team explains your results and when a conversation with your GP or a specialist makes sense.

Frequently Asked

Free Testosterone Test — FAQs

Why does the timing matter?
Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and peaks in the morning. Reference ranges are based on samples taken between about 7am and 11am, so collecting outside that window can make a normal level look low.
What is the difference between total and free testosterone?
Total testosterone is everything in your blood; free testosterone is the small part not bound to proteins and available to your tissues. When SHBG is high or low the two can tell different stories, which is why this kit reports both.
What if my testosterone is low?
A single low result should be confirmed with a repeat morning sample before any decisions are made — that is standard practice. Our clinician explains your result and when to see your GP or a specialist to find the cause.
I am on testosterone therapy — is this the right kit?
It will show your levels, but Advanced Testosterone Monitoring adds oestradiol, LH and FSH, which are usually checked on treatment. Tell us what you take and when your last dose was, because timing affects the reading.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
