About this test

Everything you need to know about Stress Hormone

Cortisol is often called the stress hormone, but it does much more: it helps regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation and your sleep-wake cycle. It follows a strong daily rhythm, peaking in the morning and falling to its lowest at night. DHEA-S, also made by the adrenal glands, is a building block for sex hormones and declines naturally with age.

This kit gives a morning snapshot of both. It shows whether your levels sit in the expected range, but a single blood sample cannot measure how stressed you are or diagnose an adrenal condition — that needs specific tests, timed at particular points of the day and arranged by a doctor. Our clinical team explains your results and when follow-up makes sense.

What's measured

What's included

2 markers in this test

Cortisol Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate (DHEAs)
Who it's for

Worth considering if

  • Ongoing tiredness, low energy or feeling “wired but tired”
  • A long period of stress and wanting a baseline
  • Acne, excess hair or irregular periods, where DHEA-S is informative
  • Following up a previous cortisol result
Important: A home test is not a diagnosis on its own. Where something needs looking at, we tell you what it means and what to do next. If you are unwell now, please see your GP or call 111 rather than waiting for a kit.

Frequently Asked

Stress Hormone — FAQs

Why does timing matter so much?
Cortisol changes dramatically through the day and can be several times higher in the morning than in the evening. The reference range is based on morning samples, so collecting later in the day can make a normal level look low.
Can this diagnose “adrenal fatigue”?
“Adrenal fatigue” is not a recognised medical diagnosis. Genuine adrenal conditions, such as Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome, are rare and need specific tests arranged by a doctor. This kit gives a useful snapshot, and our clinician tells you if anything needs following up.
Do medicines affect the result?
Yes. Steroid tablets, inhalers, creams and injections can lower your own cortisol, while the combined pill, HRT and pregnancy raise total cortisol. Tell us what you take — and do not stop any prescribed steroid without speaking to your doctor.
What does DHEA-S tell me?
It reflects the adrenal glands’ production of androgens. It falls naturally with age; raised levels in women can be linked to acne, excess hair or irregular periods, and our clinician explains it alongside your symptoms.
How does the kit reach me?
We post it to your address anywhere in the UK as soon as your order is paid, and email you when it has been dispatched. Delivery is free on every home blood test kit. Everything you need to collect your sample and send it back is in the box.
How do I collect the sample?
Your kit contains everything you need and step-by-step instructions. Read them through first, collect at the time of day this test needs (see the preparation note above), label the sample and pack it in the return packaging provided.
When should I post my sample back?
On the day you collect it, Monday to Thursday, and not the day before a bank holiday — so it reaches the laboratory quickly and does not sit in the post over a weekend. A sample that arrives too old may not be able to be analysed.
Can I order several kits at once?
Yes. Use “Add to order” on each kit and then “Order” in the bar at the bottom — they go into one order and one payment and are posted together. Clinic blood tests are booked separately, because they need an appointment rather than an address.
How do I pay?
Home kit orders are paid by bank transfer. When you place your order we show our bank details and your payment reference on screen and by email, and we post your kit as soon as the payment reaches us.
How do I get my results?
Once the laboratory has analysed your sample, your results are released to your secure account with a written explanation from our clinical team, and a call where something needs talking through. Turnaround depends on the test and starts when the laboratory receives your sample.
